French grape varieties in Tuscan Maremma

The challenge of growing French grape varieties in Tuscan Maremma was won thanks to a fundamental peculiarity: the soil. In fact, the Maremma area, as well as the Tuscan inland, is characterized by rocky soils similar to those in the Bordeaux region of France. This is exactly what enabled the cultivation of high-quality grapes like Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot in Maremma. In our Serpaia di Endrizzi estate these two varieties grow magnificently thanks to the humidity of the soil, also rich in clay and Galestro rocks, as well as the warm and dry weather mitigated by the sea breeze.
 

The importance of Cabernet and Merlot

Cabernet grapes make strong wines rich in tannins and acidity; on the contrary Merlot grapes give the wine softness and roundness. Even though they are not native of Central Italy, Cabernet and Merlot could adapt perfectly to the geological and climate features of the Tuscan Maremma; their grapes are fundamental to produce elegant and sophisticated wines.

The features of the wines

These wines have a round and innovative mouthfeel, aromatic and often complex bouquets, intense colour and dense structure. These red wines have conquered the world.
One of the most important features is their ageing potential that, month after month, gives the wines peculiar and unique organoleptic features.
 

Serpaiolo, Mèria and Gran Serpaia: scent of southern Tuscany

The wines of Serpaia di Endrizzi express the essence of Maremma’s winemaking innovation through scent and sensations.

The most renowned wine from our Serpaia di Endrizzi in Maremma is our Serpaiolo. Fresh and with a good structure, its grapes grow on a dry and hard soil, a “Serpaia” or snake nest, that gives the wine a strong and unexpected character.

Mèria, which means shadow, is the most representative wine of Serpaia di Endrizzi and is a wine full of contrasts: a dense and full-bodied wine with a ruby red colour paired with a luscious and surprising mouthfeel.

We could not miss the chance of having a special Riserva in our line: Gran Serpaia, created by Endrizzi to celebrate the 20th anniversary of its Tenuta Serpaia. Our vines have now reached an optimal age, just as our experience in Tuscany grew over time. The result is a valuable top wine.
It has an intense red colour and a complex bouquet of sophisticated aromas for an elegant and velvety mouthfeel.
